Achilles Tendon Repair

Indications for operation

A rupture of the Achilles tendon

Anaesthetic

The operation will be performed while you're asleep under a general anaesthetic.

Operation type

Open.

Incisions

A 5-6cm incision will be made at the back of the ankle over the Achilles tendon.

Procedure

The two ends of the ruptured tendon (which look like two horses' tails) are brought together and the correct tension restored. They are then held in place with strong stitches.

Wound closure

The wound is closed with absorbable stitches.

Dressings

A dressing is placed over the stitches and a plaster put on the leg to hold the foot with the toes pointing downwards.

Immediate aftercare

You will wake up with your leg in plaster below the knee. You'll be able to get up and about but will have to keep the leg off the ground and hop. Once your surgeon and anaesthetist are happy you can return home. You'll remain in plaster for 2-3 weeks, at which stage you may be fitted with a boot that allows you to put some weight on the leg. Your surgeon will discuss your rehabilitation with you and tailor it to your circumstances.

Risks

All operations carry small risks of complications. Whilst these are very rare, they need to be balanced against the potential benefits and this is something that your surgeon will discuss with you in detail before the operation. The specific risks for Achilles tendon repair are: delayed wound healing/infection, re-rupture of the tendon.
